OpenWFE requires a system with a Java Development Kit (JDK) of version 1.4.0 or later. A Java Runtime Environment (JRE) of version 1.4.0 or later is ok if you don't use the webapplication. The webapplication requires a JDK because it contains the javac compiler that is necessary in order to compile JSP (java server pages) into servlets.
